Power Automate Fundamentals # 27: Usage of JSON Function in Power Automate

Introduction:

In Power Automate, at times we must work on JSON with String Values as input. We can use JSON function in power automate to convert string values to JSON and perform related operations. As an example, string values separated with comma and also xml string values are used.

Step 1:

Login to the required Power Apps environment using URL make.powerapps.com by providing username and password and click on Flows on the left-hand side as shown in the below figure.

Step 2:

After Step 1, Click on New Flow and select instant cloud flow and provide the trigger as Manually trigger a flow and click on Create as shown in the below figure.

Step 3:

After Step 2, name flow as JSON Function and take initialize variable and name it as Set the String Names variable to contain set of names with the following fields

Name :  Names

Type :  String

Value :

[“Tom”,”James”,”Nancy”,”Rick”]

as shown in the below figure.

Step 4:

After Step 3, take compose action and name it as Convert String Names to JSON and provide

Input value : json(value: string)

As

json(variables(‘Names’))

and click on ok/ update as shown in the below figure.

Step 5:

After Step 4, take compose variable and name it Set the XMLExample variable to contain a set of names and provide

Inputs : XMLExample

Type : String

Value :

<notification>

<to>Venkat</to>

<from>AdminTeam</from>

<heading>Welcome Message </heading>

<body>Welcome onboard </body>

</notification>

as shown in the below figure.

Step 6:

After Step 5, take compose variable and name it as Convert XMLExample variable to JSON and provide

Inputs : json(xml(variables(‘XMLExample’)))

And click on Ok/ Update as shown in the below figure

Step 7:

After Step 6, run and test the flow as shown in the below figure

Note:

  1. Make sure to save and run the flow whenever you try expressions.

Conclusion: In this way we can use json function so that provided xml string or string values array can be converted to required json in power automate easily.
